I love cathedrals.

They soar heavenwards on columns of stone shaped and crafted by masters. They’re adorned by gleaming wood and rainbow-stained glass. Voices whisper and singing swells throughout their chambers.

Cathedrals are testimony to patient perseverance, to a vision beyond the immediate.

St Paul’s Cathedral in London took 22 years from the start of construction to the consecration of the first service held beneath its dome.

Construction on Notre Dame in Paris began in 1163 and was completed around 1345 — 182 years of faithful commitment to a dream and a vision many would never see.

There’s a story of a man observing stonemasons on a building site. Approaching the first, he asked about his task.

“I’m laying brick,” came the man’s assessment of his work.

The man approached a second stonemason with the same enquiry.

“I’m building a wall,” was the response.

A third stonemason paused, chisel in hand.

“I’m constructing a cathedral,” he promised.

I liken my writing journey to those stonemasons. I can choose to see myself laying bricks, with little expected pleasure or purpose. I can see a bigger picture and understand I am constructing a wall. Or I can grasp the fullness of the dream I believe God has given me, and declare I am building a cathedral.

Or perhaps, more appropriately, a library.

I’m Anna Jensen, a Christian author and writer living in South Africa. I write Christian historical fiction, contemporary Christian fiction, inspirational books, devotions and poetry, often exploring the places, people, history and faith that have captured my imagination.
